Applying for a Social Security Number

Just to keep people up to date on the process of immigrating to the US from China, the first step we had to take now that Sarah is finally here was to apply for a social security number. We were advised to wait at least two weeks before doing so in order for Sarah’s arrival to appear in “the database.” Since it’s been two weeks, we drove to our local social security office today to take care of business.

The application for an SSN was the easiest applicative we’ve filled out yet. It was one page, and most of it we could leave blank, because she has no prior social security number, and her parents don’t have one, either. The only other thing we needed to bring was her passport. No fees to pay. The card should be coming in the mail in a few weeks. Easy peasy!

Sounds too easy peasy. Are you sure you were dealing with government?
